Chiropractor for Sciatica
A natural solution to relieve and manage Sciatica
Chiropractic And Sciatica
Sciatica is one of the most common, yet misunderstood conditions and it is suggested that up to 40% of people will experience it at one point in their life. Unfortunately, sciatica frequently gets thrown in with a ‘back pain’ diagnosis. However, Sciatica is its own diagnosis and should be treated accordingly. So what can you do if you are experiencing sciatica? Can Chiropractic help with sciatica? As a Chiropractor sciatica is something I see in practice regularly and a lot of the time am able to treat it and prevent it from coming back. But let’s take a bigger look into what sciatica actually is.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is not just a type of back pain but is its own diagnosis with a specific set of causes. The pain originates from or within the sciatic nerves which are two of the largest nerves in our body that run from our low back all the way down our legs to our feet. Travelling such a far way in the body the nerve comes in contact with a lot of different structures such as muscle and tendons and so there are a lot of times when it can become compromised.
Sciatic pain occurs when one of the nerve roots (where the nerves originate in the low back) or a part of the nerve itself becomes pinched or irritated either by compression or inflammation. Due to the trajectory of the nerve it means you can feel in the pain anywhere along the nerve’s pathway – so either the low back, in the buttocks, legs, calf or feet.
Symptoms Of Sciatica
It is important to note that no two sciatic episodes are the same and this is what can make it difficult to diagnose and why it can sometimes be referred to as low back pain. Some people may feel the pain mainly in their buttocks while other feel it behind their knee.
The type of pain can also vary from a dull soreness, numbness, tingling to a full-on electric shock shooting pain. Some people even experience a throbbing pain or a stabbing pain, so it is very diverse.
Sometimes the pain is so severe that it can causes weakness in the leg and prevents people from being able to move around. Other people may have pain in one part of the leg and numbness in another. So, sciatica can be very different from one person to the next.
Sciatica During Pregnancy
Sciatica during pregnancy is quite common as baby starts to get bigger and mums posture starts to change. As your tummy starts to get bigger and become heavier your body wight shifts forward which puts a lot more pressure on the posterior parts of our body – like our spine! This can cause compression or irritation to the nerves and can lead to sciatica. The good news is that Chiropractic for sciatica during pregnancy is completely safe and is a great treatment option. As a pregnancy Chiropractor Alana uses specific gentle adjustments to improve spinal function as well as loosen any tight muscles. Alana also give specific exercises that can help to improve and maintain your movement throughout pregnancy to help ease your sciatica.
What Causes Sciatica?
There are many causes of sciatica and this is the reason it is important to get help from a health practitioner like a Chiropractor to help you determine what the cause is. Without knowing what is causing it you can not know how to treat it.

As Chiropractors in Bayswater the most common cause of sciatica we see is an underlying spine or pelvic problem which indirectly causes pressure or irritation to the sciatic nerve. Mostly we see these problems occurring in the big joints in our pelvis and this causes a lot of tension within the pelvis itself as well as the surrounding muscles which can be putting pressure on the nerve roots.
Another quite common cause of sciatica is what we call piriformis syndrome. Your piriformis is a muscle within the buttock and the sciatic nerve either runs under, above or through this muscle. When this muscle gets tight either through injury, postural distortion or pelvic dysfunction it can cause compression on the sciatic nerve which can be the cause of sciatica.
Another cause of sciatica is a herniated disc or other disc issues. What can happen is that when a disc is weakened or injured it can creep out of its confined space and press onto nerves such as the sciatic nerve. Nerves do not like being touched and so this will cause you a lot of pain. This cause is not super common but needs to be mentioned as it is something we must consider.
Other causes include degeneration either of the disc or the joints, arthritis, spondylolisthesis, lumbar stenosis, inflammatory conditions and many more.
