Chiropractor Neck Pain

A natural solution to relieve and manage neck pain

Chiropractic And Neck Pain

Most of us have at one stage in our life experienced some form of neck pain. Whether that be a feeling of restriction and stiffness or a neck that hurts to move in any direction we have all experienced some level of neck discomfort. While neck pain is unfortunately quite common it is not normal to have. So what can you do when you have some form of neck pain?

Chiropractors help people with neck pain on a daily basis and maybe we might be the answer you are looking for.

What is neck pain?

Neck pain refers to any pain, stiffness or restriction in the neck area. It may also cause pain in the shoulders, arms and head. The neck also known as the cervical spine is made up of bones, joints, ligaments, nerves and a bunch of soft tissue. It has a tough job of holding up and supporting our heads which are quite heavy and enables us to move both the neck itself and also the head.

Neck pain is one of the top reasons people seek out chiropractic care and it is estimated that 10-15% of the population have neck pain at any given time. Neck pain is a leading cause of disability as it affects peoples activities of daily living including work and exercises.

A lot of the time neck pain will resolve on its own but it can take some time and doesn’t neccesarily deal with the cause of the neck pain (only the pain itself). This is why at Innerbloom chiropractic in Diamond creek I encourage people to get assessed and adjusted for their neck pain as early as possible.

Many women experience neck pain during pregnancy due to the change in your centre of gravity as well as the weight of your growing breasts. This can cause a lot of extra tension through your neck and shoulders and change your overall posture. Whilst it is quite common it is something that you don’t have to just put up with because you are pregnant. Chiropractic for neck pain during pregnancy is a great way to relieve pain and tension in your neck and shoulders. Some of the common causes of neck pain we see with our clients are:

Poor posture

This is undoubtably the most common cause of neck pain and is due to the forward head posture that many of us experience these days. This comes about due to the way many of us spend majority of our days – rolled forward through the shoulders, hunched down and doing something in front of us e.g. computer work, being on our mobile phone, gardening, driving or doing manual labour.

This posture puts a lot of strain on our neck and starts to change the biomechanics within our neck leading to incorrect movement and therefore pain.

Incorrect sleeping positions or pillows

Sleeping in a weird position is another cause of neck pain. When our neck is in a weird position it can cause stress on the spinal joints and muscles and we can wake up feeling stiff or restricted. Having a pillow that does not suit your neck can also lead to pain as an incorrect pillow may over extend your neck leading to jamming up your joints and tightening up your muscles.

Repetitive movements or holding the head in an unusual position

If you do the same movement constantly such as looking over one shoulder or holding your phone to your head with your shoulder for a long period of time then this may cause strain to your neck muscles and joints.

Neck trauma

These are the cases where the cause of your neck pain is obvious. Usually this is due to a car accident but other common trauma includes sports injuries, falls, head clashes or blows to the head.

Other more physiological causes include herniated discs, osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease. These are problems that can occur through normal wear and tear over time. Importantly to note is just because they are there doesn’t mean you should be in pain. A lot of people live with these conditions and have little to no pain whatsoever.

Can Chiropractic Help With Neck Pain?

A lot of people choose chiropractors as their practitioner to help them with their neck pain.

At InnerBloom chiropractic it is our aim to not only help relieve your neck pain but also to find the true reason for why it has occurred in the first place. To do this we take a detailed history of not only your neck pain but we also discuss things such as your occupation, lifestyle, hobbies and any previous injuries/medical history to get a full understanding of what has happened and how we can help. We take pride in not only helping you with your neck pain but putting things in place so that it doesn’t come back.

After our detailed history we will then go through a thorough examination where we look at things like your posture, range of motion and a bunch of other tests that help us identify what is causing your neck pain. If need be we can refer you for further testing such as an X-ray.

Depending on what is causing your neck pain will determine how we treat it. We tailor treatments to each patient so that you get the best care possible. Some treatment options include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments for neck pain
  • Chiropractic mobilisations for neck pain
  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Rehabilitation exercises
  • Posture advice
  • Lifestyle advice
