Ready To Resolve Your

Headaches and Migraines?

Most people are familiar with headaches. According to the World Health Organisation, around 50-75% of adults worldwide have experienced at least one headache in the past year. Headaches can occur for many reasons and range widely in severity and location.

The good news: there are many natural treatments to relieve headaches, such as chiropractic care. At Innerbloom Chiropractic, we provide solutions for headache and migraine pain, supporting you in easing the constant pain and regaining control of your life.

Types and Causes of Headaches

Scientists are said to have identified over 300 different causes for headaches. They can originate from different pain-sensitive structures and tissues like the skin, muscles, arteries, periosteal bone covering, and the upper cervical and facial nerves.

Anything from prolonged poor posture and repetitive strains to stress and hormones can lead to headaches. Thus, it is more effective to attempt to identify the type of headache you are experiencing to provide clues as to the cause. Some of the most common types of headaches include:
• Cervicogenic headache
• Tension headache
• Sinus headache
• Migraines
• Cluster headaches

Different types of headaches can also be caused by issues such as, cranial neuralgia, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, high blood pressure, stroke, brain aneurysm, exercise, menstruation, hormonal changes like those caused by pregnancy, eyestrain, dehydration, caffeine, and hangovers

Symptoms of Headaches and Migraines

Headaches can present many different types of symptoms. They can be experienced in different parts of the head and neck and may vary in terms of pain severity and duration. Typical symptoms may include:

• Pain or tightness anywhere in the head
• Tenderness of the scalp
• Tight muscles at the bottom of the skull or neck and shoulders
• Nausea
• Vomiting

• Pain in the eyes when looking into bright lights
• Dizziness
• Vertigo
• Fatigue
• Irritability

Some of the more common types of headaches have distinct patterns that may make them easier to identify, such as:

Cervicogenic Headache

One of the most common types of headache. Usually described as a dull, constant ache on one or both sides of the head that lasts from a couple of hours to days or weeks. Pain usually starts at the neck and spreads up to the head and sometimes the eyes.

Tension Headache

Usually experienced as mild to moderately painful pressure across the forehead, behind the eyes and into the temple. Pain can be daily or every other day. Can be relieved by pressing into the base of the skull or upper neck.

Cluster Headache

A less common headache. Usually experienced as excruciating piercing or burning pain on one side of the head and behind one eye. Typically occurs at night for anywhere between 15 minutes to 3 hours. Can occur in episodes over a few weeks with long intervals.

Sinus Headache

Often caused by sinus issues such as an infection or viral cold. May share many symptoms with tension headaches but with additional nasal mucus, pain in one or both cheeks, pain in the upper teeth, a feeling of facial swelling and/or pain that worsens when bending forward.

Migraine

Described as severe, throbbing pain that lasts for hours or days and usually accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Some feel a tingling sensation in one side of the arm, leg or face, while others may experience ‘auras’ or visual disturbances resembling twinkling lights.

FAQ

How do you deliver chiropractic treatments for headaches and migraines?

We take a detailed history of your headache and discuss previous headaches and patterns. We will also explore details like your occupation, lifestyle, hobbies and medical history to understand what has happened and how we can help.
After that, we will thoroughly examine your posture and range of motion, as well as conduct other tests. We can also refer you for further testing – such as an X-ray – or to a headache and migraine specialist if warranted.
Once we discover the cause of your headaches, we will decide on a treatment plan. Each treatment is tailored to each patient so that you get the best care possible. We take pride not just in helping you manage your headache and migraine pain, but also to prevent it from recurring.

How effective is chiropractic for headaches and migraines?

Chiropractic has had great outcomes with pain management for cervicogenic and tension-type headaches. Some patients have also reported decreased migraines after chiropractic care.
However, it is important to note that not all headaches can be successfully treated by chiropractic, especially if there is a deeper underlying cause. This will be determined through your history and examination.

Is chiropractic treatment for headaches safe for pregnant women?

Yes. In fact, our resident pregnancy chiropractor is skilled in diagnosing headaches for pregnant women and ensuring that the chiropractic treatment delivered is suitable for them. She will help provide gentle, effective exercise and stretches for headache pain management.
